Writer Colin MacDonald has collaborated on a new piece, River, for Spirit of the Highlands. It’s a one-night musical event bringing together some of Scotland’s most celebrated musicians to explore the stories, atmosphere, and transformation of Inverness Castle.
River is a newly commissioned work, written by Colin, in collaboration with Caithness composer James Ross, and acclaimed Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis. The piece is in response to the work of community stitchers who created the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands (now on display at the Inverness Castle Experience) and draws inspiration from the people, landscapes, and stories woven into the artwork.
Spirit of the Highlands will take place at Empire Theatre on Tuesday 31st March at 7:30pm. Tickets and more information can be found on the Eden Court website!
Colin MacDonald’s short film Survivor was screened at the Inverness Film Festival last year and was broadcast on BBC Alba on New Year’s Day 2026 in Scottish Gaelic. Colin is also a prolific writer for radio, his credits for BBC R4 include five-part drama-documentary Pretender Prince, five-part crime drama An Eye For A Killing (both narrated by Jack Lowden), and adaptations of all six Shardlake novels by C J Sansom.
