Julian Jones’ 3D genre-busting hybrid of art, scripted drama, theatre and documentary Inside The Mind Of Leonardo starring Peter Capaldi has been picked up for US distribution by Submarine Deluxe.
Inside the Mind of Leonardo TX Sky Arts 2 in March 2013 and had a one-night only screening in Picturehouse cinemas across the UK. It was shortlisted for the 2014 RTS ‘Best Arts Film’ award and the 2013 Grierson Best Arts Documentary award, nominated for a 2014 Rose d’Or in the TV Arts category, shown at the DOC NYC festival in New York, and won ‘Best Historical Documentary’ at the 3D Creative Arts Awards in LA.
The movie is based on the artist’s private journals from the Italian Renaissance with more than 6,000 pages of handwritten notes and drawings. The feature includes his birth as a bastard peasant as well as his thwarted ambitions, hurt, anger, sexual desire, shopping lists, health tips and bawdy jokes.
The US theatrical release is planned from 5 December 2014.
