Hugh Costello’s screen dramas include the Emmy-nominated HBO movie Bernard and Doris, starring Ralph Fiennes and Susan Sarandon and directed by Bob Balaban. He has written for The Ambassasdor (BBC1) and Holby City, and the RTE drama On Home Ground.
Hugh has written close to 40 dramas for BBC Radio and has been described in the Daily Mail as ‘one of radio’s great playwrights’. Recent projects include the five-part historical drama Hidden Belfast: Forbidden Love; the single Our Truth, Their Lies, starring Monica Dolan; and A Dog in the Fight, described by The I’s radio critic as “a compelling portrait of what happens when a relationship is put to the test.” Hugh is currently writing another five-parter, The Betrayed, about the growing threat of far-right extremism in Ireland.
Irish born and bred but long resident in London, Hugh draws his subject matter from both identities. He also produces factual programmes. Among his BBC Radio 4 documentary series is Ladder to Nowhere won the Audio and Radio Industry Awards (ARIAs) Gold Award for best factual programme in 2020. Hugh produces the acclaimed history podcast 1666 and All That, available on Apple, Spotify etc.
