Gillian Freeman

Gillian Freeman was a novelist and writer for stage, screen and radio. She published thirteen novels including An Easter Egg Hunt (1981), The Leader (1965), The Leather Boys (1961), Fall of Innocence (1956) and The Liberty Man (1955).

The Liberty Man, The Leader and The Leather Boys were republished by Valancourt Books in 2014.

As a screenwriter her credits include That Cold Day in the Park (Robert Altman), Girl on a Motorcycle (Jack Cardiff) and an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s The Day After the Fair.

Gillian wrote ballet scenarios for Mayerling (1978), Intimate Letters (1978) and Isadora (1981). New productions of Mayerling opened at the Ballet de Santiago (Chile) and Stanislavski Music Theatre (Moscow) in 2013 and the ballet returned to the Royal Opera House. Until her death in 2019, Gillian lived in London with her husband, the ballet critic Edward Thorpe.
